Quiz — Part 5: Rock Physics & AVO
Learning objectives
- Self-test mastery of Part 5: elastic framework, moduli, Gassmann fluid substitution, AVO basics, intercept-gradient crossplot, synthetics + inversion
- Identify weak Part 5 topics before tackling Part 6 (Seismic Attributes) and Part 7 (Reservoir Char & QI)
- Re-run with fresh draws to reinforce the QI toolkit
Self-assessment quiz drawn from a 30-question bank covering all six sections of Part 5 — Rock Physics & AVO. The quiz randomly selects 15 questions per session.
Part 5 is the QUANTITATIVE engine of the curriculum. Many of the questions involve calculations (impedance, reflection coefficients, modulus from velocities, Gassmann fluid substitution effects, R₀ + G from rock properties). Expect this quiz to feel more computational than Parts 2–4.
What this quiz tests
- §5.1 Acoustic impedance, reflection coefficients, three independent elastic parameters (Vp, Vs, ρ) (5 Q)
- §5.2 Four moduli (K, μ, λ, E), Vp/Vs as fluid+lithology diagnostic, Castagna’s mudrock line (5 Q)
- §5.3 Gassmann fluid substitution — μ invariance, fizz effect, Vs increasing with gas (5 Q)
- §5.4 Aki-Richards two-term approximation, intercept + gradient, AVO classes (6 Q)
- §5.5 (R₀, G) crossplot, brine background trend, anomaly polygons, LMR space (5 Q)
- §5.6 Synthetic seismograms (forward) + inversion (reverse); seismic-to-well tie (4 Q)
If you struggle with Gassmann or AVO calculations, work through the §5.3 + §5.4 widgets carefully — those interactive demos build intuition that pays off across the rest of the curriculum.
