Anisotropy and Fractures

Rock has grain: shales are faster along the bedding, fractured carbonates faster along the cracks. This path runs from Thomsen's three numbers through Hudson's crack physics to AVAz and shear splitting, then into the processing shop where the eta pick and anisotropic FWI keep the image honest. It is how fracture strike and density are read from seismic without ever seeing a crack.

The physics

What anisotropy is

Velocity that depends on direction breaks the first assumption of every equation you have used so far; watching a circular wavefront become an ellipse is where the repair begins.

Why rocks are anisotropic

Layering and fractures are the two great causes, and they fail differently: VTI is a depth error, HTI is an azimuth signal. Knowing which you face decides whether the anisotropy is a nuisance or a target.

Layers and shales: the rock physics of VTI

Backus averaging shows how isotropic layers stack into an anisotropic whole, and aligned clay platelets make shale anisotropic all by itself; together they are why VTI is the default state of a sedimentary basin, not the exception.

The Thomsen parameters

Epsilon, delta, and gamma are the accepted shorthand for the whole stiffness tensor; every anisotropy conversation in the industry is priced in these three numbers.

Anisotropic moveout

Anisotropy reaches the data first as moveout that refuses to be a hyperbola: delta sets the near-offset NMO velocity and eta bends the far offsets into the hockey stick you will later learn to pick.

The ellipse is a measuring instrument: its long axis reads the fracture strike and its flattening reads the density. Fitting it from wide-azimuth data is the fracture-detection inversion.

One dial sweeps VTI through TTI to HTI; the acronyms only say where the fabric points. Dipping shales force the tilted general case on any imaging you do beneath them.

Cracks to stiffness

The bridge from geology to seismology: a population of compliant, aligned flaws becomes an effective stiffness the wave equation can consume, and HTI acquires a physical cause.

Hudson and linear slip are the two standard machines that turn crack density into Thomsen parameters; run them side by side and you learn where they agree and where the small-crack assumption expires.

Fluids in fractures

What fills the crack changes what the wave feels: fluid stiffens the normal weakness but not the shear one, which is why P-wave anisotropy reads fluid and shear splitting does not. Used together they make a fracture-fluid detector.

Building a fractured model

Background rock plus crack set plus fluid, turned into HTI parameters: this is where the physics stops being a formula and becomes a model whose azimuthal velocity field you can interrogate.

Amplitude versus azimuth is more fracture-sensitive than velocity ever was; Ruger's equation and the ellipse fit behind it are the working fracture inversion of production seismology.

Shear-wave splitting

A shear wave entering fractured rock splits into fast and slow copies: the fast polarisation reads the strike, the delay reads the density, and the whole measurement is fluid-blind, the honest complement to AVAz.

Stress makes its own anisotropy

Unequal stresses close cracks preferentially and the rock goes anisotropic with no fabric at all; the azimuthal signal you attribute to fractures may be the stress field talking, and telling the two apart is the interpretation.

In the processing shop anisotropy is the hockey stick left on the flattened far offsets; eta is the second pick that straightens it, and skipping that pick costs the deep image no matter how well the velocity was chosen.

Elastic and anisotropic FWI

FWI that ignores elasticity and anisotropy does not fail loudly, it hides the error inside a wrong velocity; elastic VTI and TTI inversion is the expensive, honest endpoint of everything this path taught.
